High school and Homeschool concert bands help young musicians to refine their skills, cultivate teamwork, and showcase their talent. Traditionally, they perform a repertoire of well-known compositions from various composers. However, there is immense value in introducing original compositions into the repertoire. Playing an original composition written specifically for the high school concert band not only offers a unique and personal musical experience but also unlocks numerous educational and artistic benefits, including understanding music theory, especially music forms. In this article, we will explore the advantages of incorporating original compositions into the concert band's repertoire, emphasizing how it fosters creativity, enhances musicianship, cultivates unity, and provides a sense of pride and accomplishment.
They Foster Creativity and Musical Expression
Introducing original compositions to a high school concert band fosters creativity and encourages musical expression among young musicians. When students perform works composed specifically for their type of ensemble, they are given the opportunity to explore music written with their instrumentation and skill level in mind. This allows for a more personalized and relevant musical experience, enabling students to connect deeply with the piece they are performing.
Moreover, original compositions often offer more room for interpretation and personalization. As students work closely with the conductor, they can contribute to shaping the musical elements, dynamics, and phrasing. This collaborative process empowers students to take ownership of the music, enabling them to express themselves artistically and emotionally through their performance.
If possible, it would be a thrilling experience for students to have the composer visit a rehearsal or two to reveal some of the origin, meaning and desired way to play the composition. That way, they can share in expressing the thoughts and emotions of the composer.
Much of the repertoire of historic concert band music has been played so often that the interpretation and style of the piece that has developed over the years has become part of the music, whether that was the intention of the composer or not. New music offers an opportunity for creative interpretation of some aspects of the playing of certain types of phrases. A more extreme example might be the usual custom of using increasing volume when playing an ascending scale or phrase. In an original composition (unless it’s marked otherwise), an ascending phrase could use decreasing volume, then a loud “hit’ on the top note.
They Enhance Musicianship and Technical Skills
Playing an original composition challenges high school musicians to enhance their musicianship and technical skills. Original works frequently include unique rhythmic patterns, diverse harmonies, and innovative instrumental techniques, requiring students to push their boundaries and improve their proficiency on their instruments.
As students grapple with the complexities of an original composition, they become more adept at sight-reading, ensemble playing, and listening to one another. These skills are invaluable not only for the specific piece they are performing but also for their overall musical growth. By delving into unfamiliar musical territory, students gain a deeper understanding of music theory and expand their repertoire of musical knowledge.
Composers of new music may not use traditional ways of writing melodies, harmonies, phrases and forms. Those playing the music must be alert to such novel practices. Also, such new ways of writing can also teach a lesson in how broad and deep the variety of music can be.
They Cultivate Unity and Teamwork
Playing an original composition strengthens the bond between members of the concert band, cultivating unity and teamwork. When working on a piece written for their specific ensemble, students must rely on one another to bring the music to life successfully. This shared sense of purpose and collaboration fosters a supportive and cohesive musical community.
As students face the challenges of mastering a new piece together, they learn to listen to one another attentively and synchronize their playing. This fosters a heightened sense of ensemble awareness, where every musician plays a vital role in creating a unified and harmonious performance. The camaraderie developed through this process extends beyond the rehearsal room, creating lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging within the band.
Here is where section leaders will have more of a challenge than usual, because they will have to study and learn the piece before they can help and lead others to play the best that they can.
They Instill a Sense of Satisfaction and Accomplishment
Performing an original composition instills a profound sense of satisfaction and accomplishment among high school concert band members. Unlike playing a piece that has been performed countless times before, an original composition offers students the chance to leave their mark on the music world.
When students premiere a new work, they become ambassadors for the composer's vision and creativity. This responsibility encourages them to bring their best to every rehearsal and performance, furthering their dedication to the craft. The sense of ownership and achievement that comes from playing an original composition can boost students' self-confidence and motivate them to explore further musical endeavors.
Audiences are Thrilled to Hear New Music
Hearing an original composition offers audiences a chance to experience new melodies and harmonies, a new take on an old style or an old take on a new style. It looks good in your advertising of the upcoming concert to promote a brand new piece. It shows that you aren’t stuck in a rut, one that your regular audience, especially parents, may be getting tired of.
An Original Composition Nurtures the Next Generation of Composers
Introducing original compositions to high school concert bands nurtures the next generation of composers. As young musicians experience the thrill of performing an original work, some may find a newfound passion for composing music themselves. This exposure to composition can spark curiosity and creativity, inspiring students to experiment with writing their own pieces and contributing to the richness of the musical landscape.
Educators and conductors can encourage this budding interest in composition by organizing workshops, inviting guest composers, or even encouraging students to try their hand at arranging existing pieces for their ensemble. By nurturing young composers, high school concert bands contribute to the growth and evolution of the musical art form.
Personal Story – When I was in high school, I arranged a number of currently popular pieces for our Concert Band and one for the Chorus. Each of the teachers was thrilled to have a student arrange for them. There were no arrangements of those pieces available so these were quite welcome. And they didn’t have to pay for them either. I got to rehearse them during class time and conduct them at the concert. I’m sure that there are other students who can do the same.
Original Compositions Provide Income for Composers
As strange as it may seem, composers, who love their work, don’t do it just for the joy of accomplishment. When an artist, craftsperson or manufacturing worker of any sort makes something, the expectation is to sell it. Granted, there are many artists who give away some things they create, but not all. If they gave it all away, they wouldn’t be able to continue to create. There are a number of advertising campaigns dedicated to encouraging people to buy from small business, which is good. Most composers are small businesses and need support so that they can continue to provide great new music. Otherwise, every band, choral group and string orchestra would be stuck with the same old music.
In conclusion, incorporating original compositions into the repertoire of high school concert bands offers an array of benefits that go beyond the musical realm. From fostering creativity and expression to enhancing musicianship and teamwork, playing an original composition empowers students to become active participants in the musical process. The pride and accomplishment that come from performing a work written specifically for their ensemble leave a lasting impact on students, inspiring them to pursue musical excellence and explore their own creative potential.
As high school concert bands continue to embrace original compositions, they not only enrich their own musical journey but also contribute to the broader cultural landscape by supporting and nurturing the future generation of composers. By championing the creation and performance of original works, these ensembles uphold the spirit of artistic innovation and ensure that the world of music continues to evolve and thrive.
